Welcome to the Brown Bear!
The Brown Bear Inn is Berwick-upon-Tweed’s most iconic pub; Berwick’s coat of arms IS the Brown Bear.
Like so many pubs in recent years the Brown Bear pub suffered a lack of investment and closed, potentially forever in 2016 and the owner, Enterprise Inns, sold it at auction in July 2016.
Concerned about the future of this important Berwick landmark business local businessman Frank Flannigan bought the property to save it from possible permanent loss…

The Story: Continued
A group of locals approached him with the proposition to invest in the Brown Bear to bring it back to life.
It was to be done as a vibrant social business showcasing everything good about Berwick, the England/Scotland Borders and beyond… now the Berwick Brown Bear project has begun!
A team of locals are now doing a comprehensive Changing Rooms, DIY SOS kind of way to turn the pub around. It successfully reopened in early December 2016.
We will now provide a foretaste of what will come when major works can be put into action next year which will extend the kitchen, accommodation and much more.
We’re working with local and regional brewers, cider makers, and food, produce and drink suppliers to develop the pub in the centre of Berwick-upon-Tweed as a showcase for what the future holds for the business!

I could still smell the paint as I sipped an excellently kept pint of local real ale. Wished I had had more time to visit more than the once. Will definitely go back there as the staff are reallly dedicated to providing good beer and a great atmosphere.
Popped in to see the changes with this new venture. Excellent. Staff are brilliant. Lots of local beer and gins. Well worth a visit. This is a new Brown Bear. Ignore the old reviews.
I’ve lived in Berwick about 11 years and in all that time I visited the Brown Bear just the once. It was a dire unfriendly place and not to be recommended. What a complete turn around. We visited early New Years Eve prior to meeting up for a family meal and were very pleasantly surprised. It has the feel of an upmarket City pub, friendly and welcoming with a good range of beers. It’s still early days but I think the new Brown Bear will give the other establishments in Berwick a run for their money.
Popped in on 23rd December with friends to try out the new community pub. Myself and my friend used to work here years ago when the pub was at its peak. Absolutely love the changes-I’m not sure anyone could replicate what the Wakenshaws did so a new direction is a winner. Brilliant choice of drinks, great service and a good atmosphere. Will def return for a relaxed drink with friends again.
Visited here with my family whilst staying in Berwick and it’s well worth a visit, excellent pub! The staff were friendly and the pub sells good ales.
Came in here by chance on my walk around Berwick and was pleasantly surprised! The staff were very friendly and they serve a good range of local and national ales. Ordered the beef pie as well (£4.95) which was pretty good. Despite some of the earlier more negative reviews on here, the place has clearly gone in an entirely new direction so is well worth giving a try if you are in the area! On a side note, very fast WiFi and available charging points if you need to stop by for that.
Been in 3 or 4 times since it reopened. Excellent, friendly folk, so pleased to see this pub in such good fettle! Welcome back to the Bear…some fine ales too…highly recommend a visit.
Lovely pub, nice beer! Looking forward to seeing it progress and prosper, good luck guys!
Very pleasantly surprised. Had always avoided the place in the past. Now it has the feel of an upmarket City pub. Obviously early days but it will be interesting to see how it develops. Good range of beers and a good attempt to cater for non drinkers. Will definitely visit again.
Visited yesterday at lunch time, interested to see how it looked now after being a regular in days gone by. Pleasantly surprised it looks good and even better had 5 hand pumps on offer. Made to feel welcome, as someone else said ” al be back”
Lovely comfortable “real” pub. Staff and service great, beer and drinks selection were good too. An eclectic decor just pulls it all together and the prices are more than reasonable. 10 of us arrived on a Saturday afternoon and were made very welcome, thanks and we’ll be back.
Great to see a lovingly-saved and restored historic pub. Great range of ales and other drinks. Good to see a high chair available too for family time.
Really loved this place. Great beers, great people & a great ethos. For the people by the people.
“Good luck with your venture, Berwick needs more enterprises like yours.
Love the new brown bear decor ❤
